Republican National Convention Review

Let’s go day by day…

Day 1- Not much to speak of, because of the limited speeches due to Gustav.

Day 2-While the Palin attacks continued, Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman went on a mild attack of Barack Obama, but there wasn’t much to speak of.

Day 3- The moment of truth.  Sarah Palin hits a grand slam with her speech, destroying Obama at every turn.

Day 4- John McCain accepts GOP nomination with an inspirational speech that focused on service and reform.  McCain was not deterred by anti-war protesters interrupting him.

But mainly, I want to focus on the last two days.

First, Sarah Palin, in a statement, I’m in love, politically speaking.  Her speech answered the critics and absolutely dissected Obama.  She used my favorite tool to do it, humor and sarcasm.  Here are some highlights…

Now I probably could have played the whole speech but there’s not enough room.

It was a brilliant, masterful art form of political dissection.  For perspective I listened to Geraldine Ferraro’s 1984 VP speech.  It’s Palin in a blowout.  I realize I haven’t been around for many VP nomination speeches, but I challenge someone to name one that was better.

Now onto last night.  John McCain’s acceptance speech began a bit slow, but was jolted foreword by an outside force… code pink.  Their slime was crawling through the Xcel Center like bugs, and they clearly had a plan to disrupt McCain’s speech.  But as you will see, it backfired and caused McCain to go off script, and deliver one of the lines of the night…

By the way, I love how those liberals who claim to love free speech, can’t just allow McCain to articulate his views.  How painfully ironic?

Anyway, that line bought the speech up a gear.  McCain didn’t hammer Obama like Palin did.  He aimed at talking up his credentials and his plans.  That filled up the first 2/3 of the speech.  The latter third talked about his POW days.  Now I’ve heard him talk about this before.  But the difference last night was he talked not about merely the physical abuse, but his change of view on life itself.  His love for America.  McCain admitted to selfishness, egotism, and being self righteous.  He said that all changed when he was deprived of America.  He learned to love America when he lost her.  Those moments of the speech were the most powerful words I’ve seen.  He then built that into a call to arms which ended his speech.  The speech ended by him compounding multiple applause lines together into one cohesive force that swept like a tidal wave over the hall and created a classic convention moment that I’ll never forget…

I used a few phrases to describe this convention…

1-It’s on.  Even the media had to admit that Obama was now in for “the fight of his life”.  The GOP came into St. Paul very defeatist and lethargic.  They left renewed and energized with a sense of, dare I say it, hope.

2-Take it back.  A James Carville line that rings true for the GOP.  Obama and the Dems have, for the past few months, claimed they were the party of change.  McCain said, no we’re taking that label back.  Obama said that he was the reformer, McCain said, no I’m taking that back.  The Republicans are the reformers, the GOP are the change agents.

And isn’t it another twist of irony that, in reality, the oldest candidate ever, has the freshest approach, and the younger, has recycled his policies from decades gone by.

Overall, I know I’m energized, are you?
